Classical Five Element Acupuncture differs from Traditional Chinese Acupuncture in that it focuses on diagnosing and treating the underlying cause of any symptom rather than the symptom itself. A vast majority of our physical symptoms are expressions of problems at the deeper levels within us. Treating these deeper roots which can reside in the mind and spirit of the individual through residual traumas or experiences, provides balance to the interconnected systems of mind, body and spirit. Our natural state is whole and ultimately our systems strive for equilibrium.

In the 1950’s acupuncture was outlawed in the People’s Republic of China due to its superstitious nature. A modification was reintroduced in the 1960’s which focused mainly on treating the manifesting symptoms of disease, or dis-ease in the body. This practice, TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine, is primarily what made its way to Western Cultures. The Classical Five Element system is the intact practice which diagnosis and treats the cause of disease, dis-ease in the body, addressing the disharmony. When the cause is addressed, the body, mind and spirit innately re-harmonize and work together for optimal function of systems and allow the spirit to flourish. While there are many benefits to TCM modalities, the aspect of spirit is what drew Amelia to the holistic practice of the Classical Five Element system.
